畸人的“尖叫” ——论《小城畸人》的表现主义技巧和主题

　　《小城畸人》是美国作家舍伍德·安德森的代表作,也是美国文学中的经典之一。这部作品的独特之处在于,其中的故事读起来不像是传统意义上有着完整情节的小说,而是一幅幅关于畸人“尖叫”的表现主义图画。作品的这种独特性是和其创作时的历史背景和文化背景分不开的。19世纪末20世纪初,工业革命在美国全面发展,生产中机器大量使用,劳动分工更加明细,这使社会日益商业化,金钱变得无所不能,成为很多人信奉的普遍“真理”,金钱操纵下的1896年总统选举充分证明了这一点。工业革命的发展打破了人与人之间原有的在农业社会中形成的和谐关系,导致了很多畸人的产生。这是故事发生的历史背景。另一方面,那个时期也是表现主义在绘画领域风靡之时。表现主义绘画的总体特征是,画家用单一的色彩、扭曲的线条和在画布上不成比例地安排叙事内容,来表现工业社会畸人内心深处被压制的情感。这种被压制的情感曾形象地被挪威画家蒙克表现在其作品《尖叫》中。蒙克因此被尊为表现主义运动的“精神之父”,《尖叫》也被尊为表现主义运动的开山之作。《尖叫》中位于前景中的面部扭曲的人可被理解为正在尖叫的人,也可被理解为正在听尖叫的人。这是《小城畸人》创作时的文化背景。...
