本文是整体研究 2 0世纪中国戏剧发展历程的一种尝试。在简述 2 0世纪对中国戏剧发展影响最为显著的事件之后 ,本文指出 ,话剧、越剧和评剧等许多新剧种的诞生 ,是本世纪戏剧进程中最重要的变化之一 ;剧本创作与舞台演出之间的全面融合 ,作品在思想上更趋重于政治与道德主题、在内容上对现实题材前所未有的注重 ,都体现出本世纪戏剧创作的明显特色 ,戏剧作品整体风格上的女性化趋势也是值得注意的现象。本世纪的戏剧发展还呈现出开放的特点 ,导致了戏剧观念的演变与现代剧场制度的引进这些深刻影响中国戏剧发展方向的变化。最后本文还指出 ,2 0世纪中国戏剧在取得了巨大成就的同时 ,也留下许多值得深入思考的难题

话剧与戏曲分别以近似生活原型的“白话”形态和以程式化为特征的“曲”的体式而体现出两者“求真”与“求乐”的审美差异。这种审美差异既与话剧及戏曲所根植的各自的文化土壤分不开 ,也与它们所承载的不同的“形式的意识形态”有关。而同时 ,作为 2 0世纪中国戏剧文化的一种结构性存在 ,话剧与戏曲从最初的历史遇合、经不断地交流碰撞而必然趋于整合。“整合”并非意味着取消话剧与戏曲各自的艺术本体性 ,实则表现出两者在文化交流的意义上的一种逻辑的、美感的协调及功能上的互补。而且正是在文化整合所提供的超越差异与对立的立场上 ,才有可能建立起一种跨越文化屏障的共同的戏剧诗学和包容着话剧与戏曲的新的现代戏剧史观。
