《中国丛报》历史人物传记的归化翻译策略应用

美国传教士裨治文(Elijah Coleman Bridgman)于1832年5月在广州创办《中国丛报》(The Chinese Repository),于1851年12月终刊,这是外国人在华创办的第一种英文报纸。《中国丛报》详细记录第一次鸦片战争前后近20年中国政治、经济、历史、文化、宗教和社会生活等情况,为当时外国人及在华外国人了解中国社会状况提供权威和详尽的记录。《中国丛报》共20卷,其中9卷设有人物传记栏目,该栏目对武则天、朱元璋等13位中国历史人物进行译介,旨在以中国历史人物的译介为契机,促进外国读者对传记人物所处时代历史的了解。在《中国丛报》的中国历史人物传记中,译者节选武则天、司马光、孔子和孟子等4位不同身份及不同写作方式的历史人物传记进行翻译,确保翻译文本的概括性和代表性。由于《中国丛报》的作者群体多为在华外国人,目标读者则是当时的外国人及在华外国人,为帮助这些目标读者理解原文,原文作者常常对这些中国历史人物的译介文本进行增加、删减或做出其他调整,将这些中国历史人物与有着相似经历的外国历史人物进行比较,这样的文本在翻译成中文时多不符合中国目标读者的阅读习惯和文化背景,难...
