詹姆斯·艾伦·麦克弗森短篇创作中的象征意义与文化身份认同

詹姆斯·艾伦·麦克弗森（James Alan McPherson,1943—）是当代美国最优秀的黑人短篇小说作家之一。他曾凭一部短篇小说集《活动空间》获得1979年的普利策文学奖,从而成为美国历史上第一位获得此奖项的短篇小说家。在此之前,他的另一篇短篇小说《黄金海岸》曾获《大西洋月刊》举办的短篇小说大赛一等奖。《黄金海岸》无疑是麦克弗森最优秀的作品之一,一经出版就得到了文学界、评论界的广泛关注。小说通过一个年轻黑人的看门人经历,描写了住在一座名叫黄金海岸的大楼里各色各样的人物。尽管这些住户来自不同的国家,承载着不同的文化,却都成为了主流白人文化的他者,都被美国主流文化抛弃了。尽管没有充分的证据证明麦克弗森在创作这篇小说的时候是以象征主义的视角写作,但从象征主义的角度来分析小说,无疑会加深对小说作者思想的理解。实际上,小说细节中展现了相当多的“象征”因素,象征主义成为一条暗线,将小数的主题推向一个新的视角。所以,要解读《黄金海岸》的内涵,象征主义应该是一个恰当的切入点。本文意欲从象征主义的角度,通过分析故事叙述者的看门人经历的象征意义、故事的发生地—大楼的象征意义、人物形象的象征意义以及...
