西方人眼中的中国之缩影——《鲁滨逊漂流续记》的东方主义批判

本文选择了一本在东西方后殖民文学研究中极少被提及的小说《鲁滨逊漂流续记》, 试图从东方主义的视角对其进行文本解读和阐释,探讨其中所构造的中国作为一个西方的“他者”形象的本质特征。通过分析,作者指出,鲁滨逊眼中的中国,是长期以来西方人眼中的“中国”之形象的一个缩影,预示了文学表现领域内“东方主义”观念的形成。西方人心目中的中国是在历史过程中形成的形象。今天西方关于中国的一些偏见和固定观念,是长期积存的西方传统文化概念的一部分,在西方历史和意识形态中有着很深的根源。随着中国的迅速发展和日益强大,世界将有越来越多的机会了解到一个真实、充满活力而不断发展的中国。而那些“丑陋的中国人”的形象将随着历史的进步和中国的发展逐步成为历史。自二十世纪七十年代后期崛起以来,后殖民主义理论研究在近几十年内取得了很大的发展。本文选取《鲁滨逊漂流续记》这本在后殖民批评领域中少被提及的小说作为一个个案,从东方主义的角度对其进行分析,以期为弥补后殖民主义研究中的遗漏之处尽一点微薄的努力。正是小说中的后殖民性因素才使得这部被“尘封”了多年的“边缘”小说在今天的语境下显示出其理论批评的价值。
